Fair Trade and Sustainable Development
Delegation to Nicaragua
Come learn about fair trade and sustainable development in Nicaragua!
Esperanza en Acción (Hope through Action) is a non-profit organization that works with more than 225 Nicaraguan artisans, helping them to strengthen their small businesses through programs that target their needs.
Nicaraguan artisans produce beautiful work but are often hindered in their success by lack of access to basic services, lack of education and difficulty finding markets that will pay a fair wage for their work. Esperanza en Acción is providing hope to Nicaraguan artisans to help them support themselves and their families through the sale of their artwork.
During this unique tour you will see the daily reality of Nicaraguan artisans and hear about their challenges and successes as they seek to strengthen their businesses and compete in international markets with their products. Learn about the basics of fair trade directly from the artisans’ who are benefiting from this alternative economic system.
We will visit artisans in their homes and their small workshops, eat with their families and hear about their history and how they learned their craft. We will also learn about the conventional trading system and how artisans are affected by intermediaries who seek to purchase their products at the lowest price possible. In addition, a visit will be arranged to talk to workers in the maquiladoras, or sweatshops, one of the largest industries in Nicaragua.
