Maria Marta Munoz is an artisan from Loma Panda. The first thing Marta does when she gets up in the morning is bring water from the well to the house. She then feeds and takes care of the animals. After doing this she begins work. But bringing water and caring for the animals takes quite a long time so she can only begin working on her ceramics in the afternoon. Sometimes she works until 11:00 at night because she started so late.

On the days that Marta or one of her sisters have to travel to Somoto to do their shopping, it takes up the entire day. If they leave in the morning, they only arrive in Somoto by noon. And they have to carry everything on their backs; the sugar, the oil, the rice, etc.

Artisans at Work

Watch Nicaraguan ceramic artisans as they take you through the various stages required to make their works of art.

This video shows two different artisan communities. Loma Panda is a group of five sisters who make rustic pottery. They live in a remote, mountainous part of northern Nicaragua and have little access to markets where they can sell their products. The other group of artisans hail from San Juan de Oriente, a community 30 miles south of Managua that is known for its exquisite decorative ceramics.
While these artisans enjoy better access to markets, they rely on Esperanza en Acción for technical assistance and access to Fair Trade buyers.

Your donation allows Esperanza en Acción to provide our artisans with important educational, fiscal, and organizational support.
